What Is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of health care that focuses on treatment of the physical body, the joints, muscles and connective tissue with 'hands on' techniques such as deep tactile pressure, stretching and manipulation.

This has several applications including:

  • Treating muscular contractions following periods of immobility
  • Increasing the quality and range of motion in joints after muscular or joint strain

This, in turn, aims to affect the functioning of the whole body via connections with the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Osteopaths also offer personal advice on stretching and strengthening exercises, posture, diet, lifting procedures and stress management.

Osteopathy and Back Pain

Osteopathic treatment involves manual techniques, including soft tissue stretching and massage, combined with mobilization and manipulation of the joints. The treatment is conducted with the patient's assistance.

Osteopathy and Asthma

Osteopathy offers assistance to sufferers by working on all aspects of the breathing mechanism, including the ribs, spine, diaphragm and other muscles of breathing.

Osteopathy and Seniors

Osteopathic treatment is designed to improve blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and alleviate disruptive influences on the nervous system. It may be adapted to the treatment of aged people as certain techniques may be more suited to this type of patient.

Osteopathy and Sports

Joint injuries, including the ankle and shoulder etc., are very common in amateur and professional sport. These injuries need to be attended to, to prevent recurrence which may lead to early degenerative conditions.

Osteopathy and Headaches

Osteopaths, as primary health care practitioners, are trained to differentiate between headaches with common causes and those due to serious pathology.

Osteopathy and Pregnancy

The techniques used during pregnancy are carefully selected in order to minimize the risk. These techniques are appropriate to the condition and the comfort of the mother.

Osteopathy and Children

Osteopathic treatment may help with babies and children with neuro-musculoskeletal problems. Currently there is a lack of evidence in osteopathy. However, in my clinical experience I have found this to be of benefit to babies and children suffering from: feeding issues, unsettled state which may be due to a difficult delivery or presentation and growth and development issues.

No manipulations are used on babies.
